Renewable World (formerly known as the Koru foundation) was launched in 2007 by members of the renewable charity industry in the UK. Their mission is to tackle poverty in developing countries through the use of renewable energy. They host projects in Eastern Africa, South Asia, and Central America to provide clean water to homes, solar power for healthcare facilities, and wind turbines for farmers to irrigate their crops. Check out more of what they do here!

Xenobia Bailey originally studied ethnomusicology at the University of Washington; this passion for the sounds and instruments of different non-western cultures transformed into a similar passion for all forms of African and Asian craftsmanship. After moving to Brooklyn and learning to crochet, she began to make and sell colorful African-American-inspired that have been featured on the Cosby show, in Spike Lee films, in fashion magazines, and on Etsy. Her detailed work with acrylic yarn is incredibly impressive, and she’s had exhibitions at the Studio Museum of Harlem, the Allentown Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Arts and Design, and many more. She is also an artist-in-residence at Pittsburgh’s Society for Contemporary Craft, at the Studio Museum in Harlem, and the Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation in New York City. We think she’d be an amazing addition to the Love and Water Community because her art is both socially and culturally conscious and wearable, as we want the art on our website to be!

This piece, “Bit by Bit, Little by Little” could be paired with Art Aids Art, a group that attempts to support South Africans affected with HIV and AIDS by promoting education and stimulating the local art community.

Eric C. Lu has very little to say about his work, and that’s actually fine with me.  Upon first glance I noticed that he has incredible technique and he has honed his craft to be able to let what is moving him take over.  He’s colorful, creative and not in the least afraid to be messy.  This last part is what seals the deal for me in saying that his work is masterful.  Because in order to be messy, you first have to be one hell of a good craftsman, at least in my opinion.  Here is what he had to say:

I graduated from Art Center College of Design in 2005 and have worked in publishing and also as a concept designer for film and advertising. But my personal work really changed after my travels to Asia (Taiwan and Hong Kong), where a lot of what I saw and experienced strongly influenced my point of view. The work feels like an extension or separate world that is constantly growing and influenced by my experiences. From my perspective, it’s like I’m just an interpreter for this separate world and that it will always exist in some way. A common idea that occurs in a lot of the work is the observation that all things are impermanent and that nothing can stay the same forever.
