Lisa Lent was a flight attendant who had a desire to create a product that would make air travel safer for those who fly frequently. Her passion soon lead to her creating Oxylent, one of the highest quality mineral supplements available on the market, and she is just getting started! Oxylent is also a supporter of Vitamin Angels, one of the most respected charities in helping reduce child mortality worldwide by providing children under the age of five with vital nutrients. Here is Lisa’s and Oxylent’s story.
Love + Water- How did you come up with the idea for Oxylent?
Lisa Lent- In 2000 I was on a flight from London to DC when I started experiencing chest pains. At only 29 years old I couldn’t imagine what it could be. I went to the cockpit and asked the pilots if I could breathe some of their oxygen. After some time, the pain had lessened, but I still felt a sharp pain when I inhaled. Once I arrived home in England, I decided to go to the hospital to investigate my chest pains. It is quite commonly known in the UK that long haul flying can contribute to pulmonary embolism or blood clots, which they suspected immediately. Effects of altitude, dehydration and poor air quality can create a negative environment in the body, which can lead to more serious health issues such as this. To my surprise, the doctors were correct and I spent the next six days in the hospital. Luckily, I was fine, but a week later, a young woman at the age of 26 was not so lucky. She collapsed at the arrivals gate at Heathrow airport after flying 24 hours from Sydney to London and sadly passed away. She had slept the entire flight and developed blood clots that contributed to her fatality. After hearing her fate, I realized how lucky I was to have had symptoms and was determined to find a way to help educate my colleagues to maintain better health and the Oxylent experience began to evolve.
L+W- Where did you go from there?
LL- This is the unknown story behind the story. Prior to creating Oxylent, I approached a nutraceutical company about creating a product for travelers. It was called “The Flight Pack”, which unfortunately launched a week after 9/11. The timing was terrible not to mention the horrific events that took place. I continued to work as a Flight Attendant, but was constantly in a state of worry that I would experience another pulmonary embolism. Ten years later, I moved to Santa Cruz, CA and decided to try again at the recommendation of a friend who is now my Mentor. He is the founder of Nordic Naturals and created one of the best fish oil companies in the world. I have followed their business path and created a company based on integrity, quality and superior formulation. Oxylent was recently rated one of the top ten best new products of the year by a leading industry publication called Vitamin Retailer. Being surrounded by wonderful friends who have helped me on this journey has contributed to the overall success of Oxylent.
L+W- Oxylent does amazing work with charities, particularly Vitamin Angels. Can you talk about your choice to work with them?
LL- During the first year and a half, I searched for a charity that Vitalah could help and partner with. Vitamin Angels are so well respected in the vitamin industry that it was an easy decision for us to make. They are dedicated to reducing child mortality worldwide by advancing availability, access and use of essential micronutrients to newborns, infants and children under five. Other goals include eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, achieving universal primal education, promoting gender equality for women, improving maternal health and combating HIV/AIDS. Last year their goal was to reach ten million children in over 30 countries and this year their goal has increased to 15 million. Our idea was to help create brand awareness for this organization by putting their logo on our boxes of Oxylent. Our publicist, PeakPR who also represents ONEHOPE Wine, does everything possible to get the word out about Oxylent and our partnership with Vitamin Angels. We are not limited to helping just one charity either. It’s really important to give back when you can and more recently, we proudly sponsored events for American Red Cross, The Kobe Bryant Foundation, Monterey Bay Rape Crisis Center to name a few. We also recently sent over 2,000 boxes of Oxylent with Vitamin Angels to Nepal.
L+W- What is the most moving moment you’ve had so far with Oxylent?
LL- I am tempted to say it is right now as I’m speaking with you. It has been two and a half years of working on this product day and night and I haven’t had a real chance to reflect on what has been happening because it is all moving so quickly. I’ve been trying to keep up with all the amazing developments that have come our way and that has helped make Oxylent and my amazing team a success. Every moment is pretty incredible. I work with a wonderful team, which includes my sister, and I couldn’t ask for anything more in terms of fulfilling my dream with Oxylent. The ultimate goal is to be in a positive state of business so we are able to give more. Parts of our proceeds are donated to Vitamin Angels every quarter and we will continue to give more to other causes as well. For example, Oxylent is also a sponsor at the Annual HollyRod Foundation Event in support of Autism.
L+W- That’s truly amazing, and you have every reason to celebrate this wonderful new product. Is there anything else we should know about Oxylent?
LL- We’re launching two new formulas shortly, which we’re really excited about. Oxylent is being highly regarded due to its quality, unique formulation and its ability to support people in their journey to live a healthy lifestyle. We are proud of the quality of our product. Studies show that we only absorb 10-20% of the vitamins we take that are in pill form. The quality of the minerals we use, Albion Minerals, are exceptionally high and the absorption rate is nearly 100% because of the effervescent technology. We use only 1.75 grams of organic cane sugar, Stevia and all the ingredients are very clean. There are no additives, no preservatives and nothing you have to Google! It’s also gluten, caffeine and lactose free. Moms, kids, athletes, elderly people and travelers love Oxylent! What was initially created for those who love to travel, has become the ultimate supplement for everyday life. People can find Oxylent at Whole Foods, The Vitamin Shoppe and to all those New Yorkers out there, Willner & Chemists, as well as on our site.
